Mirrors

Mirrors
Upon arrival in the world, everyone is given a small (roughly palm-sized) shard of mirror to communicate with. The origin of the mirror is unknown, but it allows them all to contact each other. Given each piece is fairly small and has sharp edges, they'll need to be careful not to lose it or get hurt by it. Unfortunately, players will find that the small object is very easy to lose even when they think they're being careful enough. For information about lost shards, check Tracking.

Should a character's mirror piece break further, they can try to ask for a new one - though the NPCs will frown at them greatly. Otherwise they can keep it and use them as is, or manifest glue or other substance to try to piece it back together. This will affect some of the features, making videos and illusions appear with cracks. They cannot simply will it back together the way they can create things out of seemingly nothing. No magic of any kind will fix it.

There is no "inbox or voicemail" feature with the mirrors. If you miss the call, people can leave a message. To access this, they must swipe down the mirror. Which way is down? Which ever way they usually hold it. Don't let this discourage you from putting up an inbox on your journal, just know that private mirror conversations are not as private as your characters may like. (Do not threadjack inboxes unless invited by one player or the other.)

To turn the mirror from a looking glass to a communication device, one must recite the phrase below:

"Mirror, mirror, in my hand..."

This is used to operate most of the features; all they have to do is simply state what they wish to do, at the end of the phrase.
Video
"Mirror, mirror, in my hand... Call Everyone."

This is the most natural feature of the mirrors, allowing people to view others in their mirror shard. Unfortunately, due to them being such small pieces, it may make it difficult to see someone who is holding it too close. When someone has an incoming call, the mirror will start to chime softly to provide a warning. To accept a call, one only has to gently touch the surface of the mirror. To place a call, they simply say the phrase before telling it to "call [person's name]".

Other than visually seeing each other, people can hear enough to have a whole conversation. If someone is having multiple conversations at once, the other people will each take up a different portion of the mirror surface. Much like a conference call on an electronic device.

There is a zoom-in-and-out feature, by using two fingers against the glass to come together or spread out (see: pinching a touchscreen phone/tablet). It doesn't help a whole lot, but will be able to at least show someone's head when having the mirror in hand. Sadly, this is not a "setting" that can be saved and must be done every time the mirror is used.

Unlike the other features, this one can be turned off simply by placing the mirror shard face down on any surface. Be sure not to accidentally do this mid-conversation...

"Mirror, mirror, in my hand... End Call."
Voice
"Mirror, mirror, in my hand... Talk to Everyone"

If someone wants to only contact others using their voice without the visual, they simply need to use the word "talk" to get the mirror to comply. Everyone involved in the call will only see an eerie, somewhat uncomfortable blackness looking back at them. The handy thing about this feature means they can put it in their pocket and still keep the call going.

Whether that was done on purpose or accident is up to them.

It is possible to respond to a voice call with a video feature—they just need to specify that desire to the mirror. The one who is in a voice call will get to see the other person, but the one in the video will only get that same eerie darkness.

"Mirror, mirror, in my hand... End Talk."
Filtering
"Mirror, mirror, in my hand... Filter Call/Talk to Heroes."

It's also possible to create connections that are only between a set group of people. It can include as many or as few as they want. They can say a small list of names of two or more people, which may take a bit to set up if the group is large. Again, it can be started as a video, voice, or even illusion conversation. The same rule applies if between video and voice. Only illusions are different. See that page for more information.

Like with video calls, there will be space on the mirror for each person - even if some of those spots are black due to a lack of visual.

Oddly, there will always be an extra spot in these group filtered communications for everyone. No sound or image comes from it, but everyone within the call will get the feeling that there is someone on the other side of that dark space. Asking around will not get them any answers on this phenomenon. It essentially feels like they must use this feature at their own risk.

"Mirror, mirror, in my hand... End Filter Call/Talk."
Illusions
Illusions are only created while in an active conversation. Unlike all of the other features, this one is done by sheer willpower alone. No voice commands needed to get their mirror to turn a video call of someone into a three-dimensional version. It isn't an exact copy, but more of figure cast in soft yellow light that moves and shifts the same way the other person does.

These illusions can vary in type and size, from a simple head and shoulders, to small full body that hovers over the mirror, or their full size. Think of the full size like a held projector creating the illusion a few feet away.

Illusions can be passed through with what feels like a little electric shock. If someone has strong enough willpower, they can make other people's mirror cast an illusion of themselves. That's just rude, though.

During a filtered interaction, if the original "caller" creates an illusion call, everyone also becomes an illusion call. Here's hoping everyone is decent at the time of the conversation. As for that potential unknown "person", only the original person will be witness to their mirror being completely black instead of reflecting light.
"My character is a..."
If your character has a disability of any kind, many of the features still work for them. All players are encouraged to try texting, and more information will be brought up on that in game. Anyone that cannot speak only needs to think the words in order to get their mirrors to perform any of the previous features. Those that (genuinely) cannot hear will get scrolling text that is near perfect, it even includes sound effects written out. If your character is (genuinely) mute, they will get to test out if there is a texting feature on the mirror. Or try to get by on charades or pictionary.

Now, if your character has no image in mirrors, they will find the voice feature very handy. Surprisingly, they can also use the illusion feature, though it makes a very basic human form to use and may not be the right gender for them. The call feature will only reflect their surroundings. However, if your character has a sort of fake facade that is shown to the world, it will be stripped away by the mirror. The mirrors almost always show the truth, even when they aren't wanted.

For those people who play bastards, no, they cannot add curse words to the chant and have it work. They will be met with sheer blackness reflecting back in their mirror and may find they are cut off for a few hours to a day. If they apologize sincerely, they may find it works again shortly after.

For anyone who plays an individual that does not have a human appearance, or is simply too large to use this small piece of mirror. Good luck. If they're very lucky, they may recieve a mirror shard that is slightly bigger than others, but still small to them. Whatever you think is more fun to play out. No, other people cannot get a bigger shard - they all have small ones.

As for those who are too curious for their own good and poking at this "dark presence" on the mirror network, so far their attempts have gone unsuccessful. If any futher attempts are made in Trial by Fire, please mark your header as Mirror NPC Ping.

Note: If any disability wasn't accounted for here, let the mods know. We'd love to work with you!
Tracking
If the shard is lost, it can be tracked by someone who still has their shard - they can be used to get a general image of where the missing shard is. Provided it isn't face down on the ground or other surface... Only the original owner will be able to feel a draw to the shard if they are within a few feet from it, to make it easier to find if lost somewhere nearby.

Upon the death or drop of a character, their mirror shard will either return to one of the NPCs or can be kept by their close CR. Unfortunately, this will not make them the new owner; they will not gain the ability to sense it, whenever it's lost.
